Now usually when we talk about copyright infringement, Lil Wayne’s name is not too far behind. However, Weezy is off the hook this time. The alleged copyright infringer in question is none other than Hip-Hop artist Jadakiss! The song in question is Jada’s 2004 hit single “Why?” which features Anthony Hamilton
. This song peaked at number 11 on the Hot 100 and was featured on Jadakiss’ second album Kiss of Death. “Why?” became one of the biggest hits of 2004 and today, it is still the biggest hit from Jadakiss. Did he steal it though? On a forum via 50 Cent’s website Thisis50.com, the headlines read “jadakiss stole “why” Grammy nominated hit double platinum ringtone lawsuit filed in N.Y. 2009.” This is what was posted:“The 2004 hit “why” was stolen from a new york rapper who was born in harlem and grew up in chelsea projects neighbor to whoopi goldberg, calvin simms a.k.a. “lil man”, and the wayans. The rapper owns a new york based company named shelltown records located in mount vernon, n.y. weschester county.Under the guidance of ruff ryder manager ray copeland and hype williams attorney Bradley Schnur the artist recorded music to ruff ryder producer dame grease’s music and another mount vernon producer splash’s music to present to ruff ryders ,b.ar. entertainment, erving wonder management(julius erving III, and troy carter),bloodline records, interscope records, universal music, and bad boy records. The artist johnnie simmons and co-writer darryle oldham who was signed to blackstreet’s chauncey black and sang the hook on the song also wrote a video treatment for a march with Al Sharpton with signs,T-shirts(white with black letters, old pictures of B.i.G.,etc.and the song “Thugz Prayer’ speaking on the social issues society deals with. They said they weren’t looking for anything like it and came out with the exact lyrics and did the same march..."Johnnie Simmons is the artist who claims that he co-wrote the song along with songwriter Darryle Oldham. According to him, Jadakiss’ camp basically took the song and said they weren’t looking for that sound, and then came out with “Why?” Simmons also claims that once he tried to get in touch with these major companies he was given the cold shoulder. Not sure if what he claims is true but he seems very adamant and upset about this entire issue. At the moment there is little talk about all of this and for the most part everyone is keeping quiet until the actual lawsuit hearing occurs. However, while the official court documents can’t be released yet, there are indeed very real! I have seen them. All I have to say is that if this is all true, we should definitely start seeing some major buzz about it soon. I can’t wait to see where this is going. If this song is stolen, it’s NOT a good look Jadakiss. We’ll keep you posted on this situation!
